Getting into local LLMs feels overwhelming. There are dozens of models, quantization formats, frameworks, and deployment options. Here is the practical learning path that actually works, step by step.
Step 1 - Ollama Basics
Start with Ollama. Install it, run ollama pull llama3, and start chatting. Do not overthink model selection at this stage. The goal is getting comfortable with running models locally and understanding that inference happens on your machine, not in the cloud. No API keys, no rate limits, no data leaving your computer.
Step 2 - Prompting for Local Models
Local models respond differently to prompts than cloud models. They are smaller, so you need to be more explicit. Learn to write clear system prompts, use few-shot examples, and structure your requests so a 7B parameter model can follow them reliably. This skill transfers directly to agent design later.
Step 3 - Quantization
Understand why a Q4_K_M model uses half the RAM of a Q8 version and what quality you lose. This matters when you want models running in the background on your Mac without eating all your memory. For desktop automation, you want fast and light, not maximum quality.
