The Engineer's Trap - Optimizing Everything Like Debugging Code

This is exactly what happened to me. I am a software engineer, so naturally I tried to optimize my meditation practice like I was debugging code. Track the metrics. A/B test different techniques. Measure outcomes. Build a system around it.
It did not work. And the reason it did not work reveals something important about how engineers approach AI agents too.
The Debugging Mindset Applied to Everything
Engineers are trained to decompose problems, isolate variables, and iterate toward optimal solutions. This works brilliantly for code. It works terribly for things that require surrender, patience, or simply showing up without an agenda.
The same pattern shows up with AI agents. Engineers want to optimize every prompt, measure every token, benchmark every model. They build elaborate systems for agent orchestration when a simple CLAUDE.md file and a direct conversation would produce better results.
When Optimization Becomes the Problem
There is a point where optimizing a system creates more overhead than the optimization saves. A meditation practice that requires a spreadsheet is not a meditation practice - it is a data collection hobby. An AI agent workflow with seventeen MCP servers and custom routing logic might be slower than just talking to the agent directly.
The engineer's instinct to optimize is valuable. But knowing when to stop optimizing is more valuable.
Letting the Agent Work
The most productive AI agent users are often not the most technically sophisticated ones. They are the ones who write clear instructions, provide good context, and let the agent do its thing without micromanaging every step.
Sometimes the best debugging technique is to stop debugging. Sometimes the best agent optimization is to stop optimizing and start working.
