How to Launch an Open Source AI Agent - What Works on Reddit

We have launched multiple times on Reddit across different subreddits. Some posts got thousands of upvotes. Some got buried. Here is what actually made the difference.

Show Real Tasks, Not Feature Lists

A demo video showing the agent automating a real Twitter workflow - composing a tweet, adding an image, scheduling it - gets 10x the engagement of a bullet-point feature list. People do not care what your agent can do in theory. They want to see it doing something they personally need done.

The best performing posts showed the agent completing a CRM update in Salesforce (the kind of tedious data entry everyone hates), automating a multi-step browser workflow, or organizing files across multiple folders. Mundane tasks that save real time.

Where to Put the GitHub Link

Counterintuitive but consistent across our launches - putting the GitHub repo link in the post body triggers Reddit's self-promotion filters and reduces visibility. Put it in the first comment instead. The post itself should be pure value - the demo, the problem it solves, the result.

The comment with the repo link often becomes the top comment because people upvote it for visibility. This actually gives your link more prominence than burying it in the post body.

Subreddit Selection Matters

r/MacApps and r/SideProject gave us the best conversion to GitHub stars relative to post reach. r/ArtificialIntelligence has huge reach but lower conversion because the audience skews toward discussion rather than trying tools. r/LocalLLaMA responds well if your agent works with local models.

Timing and Titles

Post Tuesday through Thursday, morning US time. Titles that state what the agent does - not what it is - perform better. "I built a macOS agent that automates your browser with voice commands" beats "Introducing AgentX - an AI automation framework."

Be specific. Be practical. Show the work.
