Reddit and Twitter Drive More Signups Than Short-Form Video

Is short-form content actually driving growth for developer tools? For most of us, the answer is no. Reddit and Twitter have driven way more signups than any short-form video strategy.

The Reels Experiment

I tried doing Instagram Reels for a few weeks showing a macOS app in action. Screen recordings of the agent automating tasks, quick demos of voice commands, before-and-after workflow comparisons. The views were decent - a few thousand per video. But the conversion to actual signups was almost zero.

The problem is intent. People scrolling Reels are in entertainment mode. They watch a cool demo, maybe like it, and keep scrolling. They are not thinking about downloading a macOS app. The audience mismatch is fundamental.

Why Reddit Works

Reddit converts because people are actively searching for solutions. Someone posts "how do I automate this repetitive task on my Mac" and your tool is the answer. They are already in problem-solving mode. The intent is there.

A single well-placed Reddit comment or post in the right subreddit can drive more signups in a day than a month of Reels. The key is being genuinely helpful - answering the question, providing context, and mentioning your tool only when it is actually relevant.

Why Twitter Works

Twitter works differently but just as well. Developer Twitter is a community of builders who share tools with each other. A thread breaking down how you solved a real problem gets shared organically. The audience self-selects for people who would actually use your product.

The Practical Takeaway

If you are a small team building developer tools, stop trying to make short-form video work. Put that time into:

  • Monitoring Reddit for relevant discussions
  • Writing Twitter threads about real problems you solved
  • Engaging genuinely in communities where your users already hang out

Views are vanity. Signups are sanity. Go where the intent is.
