The Productivity Tool You Actually Use Daily

A Reddit thread asked the classic question: "What productivity tools do you actually use daily?" The answers were the usual suspects - Notion, Todoist, Raycast, various note-taking apps. But the most interesting responses were from people who had started using AI desktop agents and found they replaced several of those tools at once.

The pattern is simple. Most productivity tools require you to context-switch into them. You stop what you are doing, open the app, perform some action, then go back to your actual work. That friction adds up. People estimate they lose 20-30 minutes a day just switching between tools.

Always Present, Never in the Way

An AI agent that runs as a native menu bar app on your Mac changes this dynamic completely. You do not open it - it is already there. You speak a command or type a shortcut, and it acts on whatever you are currently looking at. No tab switching, no app switching, no losing your place.

Want to add a task from a Slack message? The agent sees the message on your screen, extracts the relevant info, and creates the task in whatever tool you use. Want to summarize the document you are reading? The agent reads it through the Accessibility API and gives you a summary without leaving the page.

Fewer Tools, More Flow

The deeper insight is that many standalone productivity tools exist because automation between apps was too hard. You needed a separate app for clipboard management because copying between apps was clunky. You needed a separate app for window management because macOS defaults are limited. An AI agent that can control any app eliminates the need for many of these specialized tools.

This does not mean AI agents replace everything. You still need your core tools - your code editor, your design app, your communication platform. But the glue between them - the copying, reformatting, filing, scheduling - that is exactly what a desktop automation agent handles well.

The best productivity tool is the one you forget is running until you need it.
