Extra Usage on Claude: What It Is, How It Works, and How to Manage It

Matthew Diakonov··9 min read

"Extra usage" is a prepaid credit system on Claude that lets you keep working after your monthly plan allowance runs out. If you have seen messages about extra usage in Claude, Cursor, or Claude Code, this guide covers everything: what it is, who needs it, how to add credits, and how to keep costs under control.

What Is Extra Usage?

Extra usage is a separate billing pool on Claude, independent of your monthly plan. When your plan's included tokens are exhausted for the current billing cycle, Claude draws from your extra usage balance instead of cutting you off.

Anthropic introduced this system in early 2026 alongside a change to how third-party apps are billed. Before the change, apps like Cursor and Claude Code shared your plan limits. Now, they exclusively use the extra usage balance.

Key distinction

Your plan allowance covers direct Claude usage. Extra usage covers third-party apps and acts as overflow when your plan runs out. They are two separate balances on the same account.

How Extra Usage Works

The system follows a straightforward priority order:

How Extra Usage Billing WorksYour RequestClaude chat, Cursor, Claude CodeThird-party app?YesExtra UsagePrepaid balanceNoPlan AllowanceMonthly includedPlan exhausted?Falls through toExtra UsageBalance = $0: requests blockedAdd credits at claude.ai/settings/usagePlan allowance flowExtra usage flowBlocked (empty)

For direct Claude usage (claude.ai, mobile, desktop), your plan allowance is consumed first. If it runs out mid-cycle, extra usage kicks in as overflow. For third-party apps, extra usage is always the source.

Who Gets Extra Usage Credits

Every paid Claude subscriber has access to extra usage. When Anthropic rolled out the new billing model, they also gave one-time starter credits based on plan tier:

PlanMonthly priceStarter creditNotes
Free$0NoneNo extra usage access
Pro$20/month$5 to $100Amount based on third-party app usage history
Team$30/seat/month$100/seatApplied per seat
EnterpriseCustom$200Organization-wide allocation

If you never received a starter credit, check claude.ai/settings/usage. Some accounts require manually claiming the credit from a banner notification.

How to Check Your Extra Usage Balance

  1. Go to claude.ai/settings/usage
  2. Sign in with your account
  3. Look for the Extra Usage section
  4. Your current balance, spending history, and any auto-reload settings are shown here

The page also shows a breakdown of which apps consumed your credits and how much each session cost.

How to Add More Extra Usage Credits

When your balance is low or empty:

  1. Visit claude.ai/settings/usage
  2. Click Add Credits under the Extra Usage section
  3. Choose a preset amount ($5, $10, $20) or enter a custom value
  4. Confirm payment with the card on file
  5. Credits apply instantly

You can also enable auto-reload, which automatically tops up your balance when it drops below a threshold you set. This prevents interruptions during long Cursor or Claude Code sessions.

What Draws from Extra Usage

Not all Claude usage counts against your extra usage balance. Here is the breakdown:

ApplicationUses extra usage?Details
claude.ai (web)Only as overflowPlan allowance first, then extra usage
Claude mobile appOnly as overflowSame as web
Claude DesktopOnly as overflowSame as web
CursorAlwaysAll requests use extra usage
Claude Code (CLI)AlwaysAll requests use extra usage
WindsurfAlwaysAll requests use extra usage
Cline (VS Code)AlwaysAll requests use extra usage
Other OAuth appsAlwaysAny app connected via OAuth

Third-party apps never use your plan allowance

This is the most common point of confusion. Even if your plan allowance has capacity remaining, third-party apps will only draw from your extra usage balance. The two pools are completely separate for third-party apps.

How Fast Extra Usage Gets Consumed

Burn rates vary widely depending on which tools you use and how you use them:

Usage patternApproximate daily cost$20 credit lasts
Light Cursor autocomplete only$0.50 to $13 to 6 weeks
Moderate Cursor chat + completions$2 to $45 to 10 days
Daily Claude Code sessions$5 to $151 to 4 days
Heavy multi-app usage$10 to $25Less than 2 days

Claude Code is the heaviest consumer by far. A single large codebase refactor can burn $5 to $15 in one session. Cursor autocomplete, by contrast, is relatively cheap per request.

Common Extra Usage Error Messages

When your extra usage balance runs out, you will see one of these messages depending on the app:

MessageWhere it appears
"You're out of extra usage. Add more at claude.ai/settings/usage and keep going."Claude.ai, Claude Desktop
"Third-party apps now draw from your extra usage, not your plan limits."Cursor, Claude Code, Windsurf
"LLM request rejected: third-party apps now draw from your extra usage"Claude Code CLI, API-level errors
"We've added a $X credit to get you started. Claim it at claude.ai/settings/usage"Initial setup notification

All of these point to the same solution: visit claude.ai/settings/usage and add credits.

Tips for Reducing Extra Usage Costs

If you want to make your extra usage balance last longer:

  1. Use claude.ai directly for exploratory conversations instead of routing them through Cursor or Claude Code. Direct usage draws from your plan allowance first.
  2. Be specific in prompts when using Claude Code. Vague instructions lead to multiple tool calls and retries, each consuming credits.
  3. Set spending alerts if available in your account settings, so you know when your balance is getting low.
  4. Use auto-reload with a cap to prevent surprise charges. Set a monthly spending limit alongside auto-reload.
  5. Choose the right model for the task. Haiku is significantly cheaper per token than Opus for tasks that do not need maximum capability.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does extra usage expire? Starter credits may have an expiration date shown on your usage settings page. Manually purchased credits generally do not expire while your account remains active.

Can I transfer extra usage between accounts? No. Extra usage credits are tied to the account that purchased them. Team and Enterprise accounts manage credits at the organization level.

What happens if I downgrade my plan? Your extra usage balance remains. You can still use it for third-party apps even on a lower-tier plan. However, the Free plan does not have extra usage access at all.

Is there a maximum extra usage balance? Anthropic does not publicly state a hard cap. Most users load $5 to $100 at a time. Enterprise accounts may have different limits.

Can I get a refund on extra usage credits? Anthropic's refund policy for extra usage credits is handled through their support team. Unused credits may be eligible depending on your situation.

Fazm is an open source macOS AI agent that starts with free built-in credits, so you can try it without worrying about extra usage. When you are ready, connect your personal Claude Pro or Max subscription and keep going. Open source on GitHub.
