Analyzed 1,200 Stuck Social Accounts - Specificity Beats Generality Every Time

We looked at 1,200 social media accounts that hit a growth plateau - accounts that gained followers early but then flatlined for months. The pattern was consistent across platforms: accounts posting generic content stalled, while accounts with extreme specificity kept growing.

The Generality Trap

The stuck accounts shared common traits:

  • Broad topics like "productivity tips" or "tech news"
  • Content that could have been posted by anyone in the space
  • No clear reason to follow this account over hundreds of similar ones
  • Posts that got engagement but not follows

Engagement without follows means people find your content mildly interesting but not worth subscribing to. It is the social media equivalent of window shopping.

What Specificity Looks Like

The accounts that broke through plateaus got more specific, not broader:

  • "Productivity tips" became "Obsidian workflows for academic researchers"
  • "Tech news" became "macOS automation for solo developers"
  • "AI content" became "prompt engineering for legal document review"

Each narrowing made the content more valuable to a smaller audience - but that audience actually followed and engaged consistently.

The Compounding Effect

Specific content compounds because it builds authority. When you post consistently about one narrow topic, the algorithm learns who to show your content to. Your followers share it within their niche community. You become the go-to source for that specific thing.

Generic content does not compound. Each post competes independently because there is no accumulation of authority or audience expectation.

Applying This to Product Marketing

This principle applies directly to how we think about Fazm's positioning. "AI agent" is too broad. "macOS desktop AI agent that automates your daily workflows using native accessibility APIs" is specific enough that the right people immediately understand the value.

If you are building a product or growing an account, resist the urge to go broad. Find the smallest audience that cares deeply about what you do, and serve them specifically.
